Plumen’s lightbulb wins Design of the Year

Design Stories No Comments

British Designer, Samuel Wilkinson’s ‘beautiful and smart’ Plumen 001 lightbulb is the overall winner at the 2011 Brit Insurance Design awards.

Here at Agog, we fell in love with the Plumen lightbulb design as soon as we saw it back in 2011 and covered it in our Stocking Fillers, Part 1 blog entry. We think it is a worthy winner.

“The Plumen lightbulb is a good example of the ordinary thing done extraordinarily well, bringing a small measure of delight to an everyday product,” says Stephen Bayley, the 2011 jury chair.

The Plumen lightbulb will be on display at the Design Museum from today; alongside other shortlisted products, ranging from the +J Jil Sander collection for Uniqlo to Transport for London’s Barclays Cycle Hire project, until 7 August.

We Love Typography

Typography No Comments

Here at Agog, we love Typography and one of the blogs that we follow keenly is http://ilovetypography.com.

They have just resurrected “The Week in Type”, which promises to be “a weekly roundup of new releases, type and lettering to inspire, type tips, videos, and lots, lots more.” So you don’t miss their weekly roundups you can sign up to their feedburner here.

ILT are turning their hand to publishing in 2011 bringing out: Codex the Journal of Typography, “a new quarterly print magazine devoted to typography and lettering. featuring: typeface reviews, interviews, type history, type tips, new and notable faces, showcases, essays, webfonts, grids, type design, and much more.”

We will be excited to see this, if you wish to express an interest in this new quarterly publication you can do so here.

In their last post Patrica from ILT photographed and uploaded wonderful lettering specimens from the French Album du Peintre en Batîment (1882).

The image above bears the caption Forme Bambous. Everyone at Agog are as amazed as IloveTypography (ILT) that this typography was created back in 1882 as it looks far more modern than this.

Giant blue cock to stand on fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square

Art No Comments

Hahn / Cock by Katharina Fritsch

In early 2010 six internationally acclaimed artists were shortlisted (to see a full list of the shortlisted artists and their entries click here.) for the Fourth Plinth Commission.

The artists were invited by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group to make maquettes for the public consultation phase of the commissioning process. During the exhibition of the maquettes at St Martin-in-the-Fields, just off Trafalgar Square in central London, over 17,000 members of the public commented on which artworks should be chosen for the 2012 and 2013 commissions.

At 10am on last Friday, 14 January 2011, Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced that “Powerless Structures, Fig. 101″ by Elmgreen & Dragset has been successfully commissioned for 2012 and “Hahn / Cock” by Katharina Fritsch has been commissioned for 2013.

Stocking Fillers: Part 1

Design Stories 2 Comments

Over the next week we’ll be looking at and sharing well designed, interesting presents perfect for stocking fillers on our blog.

The first two products that have caught our eye are The Hungoevr Cookbook and Plumen, the designer lightbulb.

Hugoevr Cookbook

Written by Milton Crawford and designed and illustrated by design consultancy 300 Million, the Hungoevr Cookbook decides from your response to a quick questionnaire which recipes will be right for your particular hung-over state.

Author Milton Crawford writes that a hangover “is an opportunity to see and taste the world in a new way.” There is a “subtle art of dealing with a hangover that goes far beyond the traditional British solution of chucking a full English at it”

Available to buy from Amazon for £3.91 and at other good bookshops.

Plumen – the designer energy saving light bulb.

We love the way Plumen have redesigned the humble light bulb to create a bulb you wish to show off rather than hide behind a light shade.

Available to buy direct from Plumen’s online shop for £19.95.

An extra bank holiday to celebrate Royal Wedding

Design Stories No Comments

When the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was announced last week, the reaction by everyone in the office was indifference.

Yes, we were all wondering what the naffest designed commemorative cup or plate would look like but we weren’t too bothered.

That was until today when it was announced that that there will be a special bank holiday in 2011 to celebrate the royal wedding on 29th April.

Here at Agog, we would like to know what you will be doing on 29th April 2011?

And of course, send us pictures of those commemorative cups and plates as and when you see them over the next couple of months!

By now all Twitter users must have moved over to new twitter.

If you haven’t then you should… It does everything that you wanted old twitter to do, it’s as good as the third party apps such as Tweetdeck for using Twitter, ok, you can’t have other social networking sites running concurrently but it has some good functions.

If you want some help with the new twitter and the functions it offers, then check out Twitter’s dedicated page: http://twitter.com/newtwitter

We’ve moved over to new twitter and love it, you can find Agog on Twitter at twitter.com/agoglimited
